Sankana Heritage

Roots of Resistance, Echoes of Empire

Our Heritage: The Spirit That Sankana Inherited

Sankana’s roots lie within the great Mabia Clan, descendants of the ancient Mamprugu Kingdom founded by Naa Nyagse. The people migrated westward after internal conflicts fractured their bonds in Karaga (present-day Dagbon). As hunters and warriors, they journeyed through Gonja land (Daboya) to Gudaayiri, before settling in Sankana.

"We were the Song people. When invaders failed to defeat us, they said: Song Kanee – the Song have hardened. The British called it Sankana."

Our Heritage – The Identity of Sankana

🏛️ The Paramountcy & Chieftaincy System

Chieftaincy in Sankana is a sacred trust. The Sankana Naa and his council preserve customs, adjudicate disputes, and organize major cultural events. Alongside them stands the Tendaana, or Land Custodian, who oversees spiritual rituals, land offerings, and ancestral communication.

This dual leadership sustains the spiritual-legal balance of Sankana society.

🕊️ Spiritual Sites & Shrines

Sacred groves, ancestral shrines, and the Landlord’s grounds are revered across the community. These are not tourist spots, but living places of power—where libations are poured, blessings invoked, and the past speaks into the present.

Visitors may observe rituals by permission, guided respectfully by local elders or shrine custodians.

🪶 Language, Proverbs & Storytelling

Sankana’s language, Dagaare (Manlarle dialect), is infused with depth:

  • Proverbs are used in place of argument.

  • Folktales are teaching tools, recited by moonlight.

  • Praise songs preserve names of heroes, harvests, and homesteads.

This oral tradition is the backbone of Sankana’s intergenerational learning.
